Hey builders,

This week, the agent hype put on a hard hat.

Money is landing on teams that ship into real workflows, and the giants are racing to give those agents a voice and a keyboard.

xAI is pushing coding, Microsoft rolled its own models, and a seed team just banked $25M to make agents accountable.

Engineer spots left this month

Each month, I work with a curated group of cracked 0→1 engineers. The kind founders want to hire or co-found with.

As of this issue, only 28 spots remain.

If you’re building something on the side, bored at Big Tech, or just too good to be cold applying, this is your sign.

🔍 Startup Spotlight

Sailor Health

Sailor Health is building geriatric mental health care that actually reaches older adults, pairing clinician tools with patient support that works outside the clinic.

In nine months, they’ve hit multi-million revenue, backed by top-tier investors, and they’re keeping the team tight in SoHo.

They’re hiring a Founding Full-Stack Engineer to own architecture and ship V1 across the patient experience, therapist workflows, and EHR.

You’ll also build speech-to-text triage, care navigation copilots, auto-summarized notes, intelligent intake, and real-time voice agents.

TL;DR

First engineer on an AI-first geriatric mental health platform

— Clear path to Head of Engineering

— NYC hybrid, 3+ days onsite; relocation support; visa possible

— Comp: $150k–$250k base + 0.5%–2% equity

— Stack: Next.js, Flask, Node.js

— Team: 8; founded 2024; strong traction audio data R&D company redefining how AI learns from speech

Megan’s Take

This is real product work where shipped code touches clinicians and patients fast. If you want ownership, tight feedback loops, and a shot at leading the org, this seat is worth a serious look.

🤖 AI / Industry Recap

🤖 Maisa AI raises $25M for “accountable” agents

Seed led by Creandum; launches Maisa Studio for “accountable” AI agents aimed at real production workflows.

🐦 Musk’s xAI forays into agentic coding with new model

Releases grok-code-fast-1 for autonomous coding tasks, free to select partners like GitHub Copilot and Windsurf for a limited time.

💻 Microsoft AI launches its first in-house models

Debuts MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-1-preview; voice model can generate ~1 minute of audio in under a second on a single GPU, with early Copilot integrations.

Megan’s Take

Startups are finally targeting real workflows and buyers, and the checks are following. Big platforms shipped shiny voice and coding updates, but the winners will be those who turn a “cool demo” into repeatable revenue with fewer human handoffs.

AMA

Question:

I’m hire number three at a seed startup. Offer is 0.8% on a 4-year vest, 1-year cliff, no acceleration. What should I push for?

Answer:

Another amazing question this week.

For seed hires 3 to 5, 0.5% to 1.5% is common. Ask for double-trigger acceleration on acquisition, a longer post-termination exercise window, and clarity on refresh grants tied to milestones.

Thought Prompt of the Week

If titles and pay were equal, which team would you pick?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

We were hunting for a founding engineer. Megan sent two people who actually shipped. We hired one within a week and put the search on hold.
